What is LHEVIA building?
Lighter-than-air platforms that operate in the stratosphere, between 1 and 20 km, carrying connectivity and Earth-observation payloads.
What is lighter-than-air?
A vehicle that derives lift from buoyancy — displaced air — rather than wings or rotors alone. LHEVIA platforms are sized for long-duration stratospheric flight in the 1–20 km band.
Why operate between 1 and 20 km?
That band sits above most weather and ground interference, yet well below orbit. A platform can hold position over a region for extended periods while staying close enough to the ground to be useful for communications and observation.
How does hybrid propulsion work?
Electroaerodynamic (ion-wind) thrust: high-voltage electrodes ionize surrounding air, and the moving ions drag neutral air to produce thrust. Conventional propellers, electrically driven, provide complementary authority. Both paths run on onboard electrical power.
How is this different from satellites, balloons, and drones?
Satellites are distant and orbit-bound. Drones and aircraft cannot loiter for long. Traditional balloons drift. LHEVIA combines buoyancy with hybrid propulsion to hold station over a region — closer than orbit, more persistent than aircraft.
What are the platforms used for?
Connectivity — acting as an aerial base station for broadband and disaster-response communications — and Earth observation, providing persistent monitoring of a region. Missions can combine both roles.
What is Earth observation without orbit?
A stratospheric platform can watch the same area continuously from a high, stable vantage — without the cost and latency of spacecraft, and without the endurance limits of lower-altitude aircraft.
What is LHEVIA not claiming?
We do not present the vehicle as a satellite or orbital system, we do not treat buoyancy as a marketing gimmick, and we do not use combustion propulsion. Performance figures, customers, and flight dates are shared only once verified.
What does Roma mean for LHEVIA?
LHEVIA is based in Roma, Italia. Engineering and company operations are rooted there; contact is via hello@lhevia.com.
